so, i took a look at the three year check (you know, to mark my calendar) and those cards (with elephant, chair, etc.) are for a vision test, so i guess i should make sure he can identify them. now i am pondering if i should teach him the japanese or english. i mean, if he knows them in english i can translate (if needed) but what if the person testing him thinks i'm lying? on the other hand, i really don't want to be the one to introduce japanese words to him (though i'm sure i'm the reason why hiro says 'itai itai itai!' when something hurts. *sigh*) what to do, what to do?

Sorry, but if you think your child is healthy and fine developmentally, I don't see the point of those checks. They just want to do them to gather statistics anyway and it's not like you are going to get any current up to date info at them, in fact, you are more than likely going to get seriously outdated info IMO. I took my kids to the baby check ups because in my city I could have them done at any doctor's office of my own choosing. I haven't taken them to any of those big cattle call checks though for toddlers or older kids. I wouldn't worry about it myself.
Are these children health checks only in Japan? Because I have never heard of them in Australia. My sister has 2 children, and she hasn't had to take them for any check ups, unless she feels like there is something wrong. It's interesting....
By the way, Tomoyuki is so gorgeous! I hope your not too busy without your mum!
When I took Bailey to his 3 year cattle call check up all they did about those cards was to ask me if I had done the test at home to make sure he could see well or not. As a matter of fact, we didn't even use them at all at the check up- it might be that you won't use them either. And as for worrying about what language- I would say whichever he feels most comfortable speaking in.

About the cards,for Hiro, at the 3 year cattle call thing. I think that Hiro knowing them in either language should be fine. They really do cut us gaijin mom's a bit of slack like Wendy said below someplace, and I think she's right. :) For what it's worth, when I took B to his 3 year deal a few years back. His language at the time, was more English dominant at the time (still is, but now he does both langauges), he only knew the cards in English when he was 3. He said them in English and that was fine. As long as he knew them. if you want, you can tell the tester, what he said in Japanese. I told the tester whatever my DS1 said in English, I told them the equivelent in Japanese and it was fine/okay. : )
