hiro seems to be doing well adjusting to school. he smiles a lot, and he says he has fun, and he hasn't cried (yet). but he was a napping boy until he started school. i guess i thought kids still nap at preschool (maybe only hoikuen (day care)?) anyway, that means he comes home tired and super-cranky. however, it's too late for a nap, really. the bus is scheduled to come at 3:45. and today, they were more than ten minutes late. i guess i could try to get hiro to nap, but i'm afraid he'll sleep for a long time, wake at 8 pm hungry and won't go to sleep again for hours. *sigh* i guess he'll adjust (poor little guy) but i wish he could take a nap.

The nap thing is hard isn't it? I used to work in a village in Fukushima and part of my job was going on the hourlong busride dropping all the kids off. We would be handing over at least a couple of sleeping kids everyday. :(
And yup. Hoikuen is all about the nap. Until half way through their last year (when most of them are 6) they have to lie on their futon for 1 1/2 hours. Meg goes to sleep at 7:30 and wakes up at 6:30. She has fought the nap thing since day 1. wanna swap kids? ;)
That is hard- We used to just let the kids sleep if they were tired but most of them stayed a wake for the whole day (although the littlies always slept at about 2pm...usually just slumped over their craft!!!)
They finished at 2:30pm though so I guess if there parents wanted them to have an hour and a bit nap when they got home I guess they could.
Maybe he will get used to it- I guess you could try getting him to sleep earlier by feeding him earlier? No real experience with this sorry...
Hope he gets used to it & you must be so proud though that he is doing so well!
yeah that is hard transition, my kids were not nappers, so no adjustment for me, just quiet and chill time for them.
My DD gave up naps at 2, but the first few months of kindy, especially the hot summer months and on swim days, she was really tired and often fell asleep on the couch when she got hom. I let her sleep for about half an hour and then made her wake up. She was extremely unhappy about it and unpleasant until bed time, but eventually she adjusted. I can't remember the last time she came home and fell asleep.
Coming in a bit late here but congratulations to Hiro and glad to hear he's going happily. Poor Sasha not being allowed on the bus, but at least it means she'll be looking forward to the day she gets to go too.
Once you're all in a routine, things should get a bit easier for you too with 'only' having the two at home.
