hiro had his 18-month-old check up today, though he is nearly 19 months. LOL he is small (knew that) but balanced, so i guess that's a good thing. we were shown how we should be brushing our children's teeth...lots of tears (not from hiro) and struggles from parents. hmmm. we brush hiro's teeth, but it's not a traumatic occasion in our house. he may not have the cleanest teeth in the 18-month-old set, but he's not traumatized, either! geesh.
there were lots of questions and now i am not sure of my baby or my ability to be a good mother to him. *sigh* would things be different back home? i don't know.

BAH humbug to your concerns. You are a fab mum and Hiro is a great little boy! What kind of questions were they asking!?!
I`ve seen you in "mothering" action with Hiro and your instincts and style seemed just great to me. I find that when I attend "instructional" events for both school events and for child-rearing events the other mothers seem so much more into the stuff with lots of questions and lots of concerns and then I think that something is wrong with me for my lack of questions and concerns. But I think that I have confidence in what I am doing and maybe they don`t. Trust yourself. You are the best mother for your kid.
thank you midori and jan. the questions were directed at me. the ones that got me most were: do you take your child with you when you visit friends? do you go out often to see friends in town? do you have japanese friends? does hiroyuki have friends?
i had to answer no to these, and the questions were asked more than once. it bothered me a lot. i really feel isolated so times and that i have no friends nearby. as a mother i am sure i am doing fine, but the not having friends part bothers me, and they seemed to be making a big deal out of it...
From what I know about you from FWC and from when I read your blog sometimes, I think you are a great mom!
When, Branden was younger before he started yochien. It was hard for us too, to make friends and such, arrange play dates and all that stuff! But since Branden started yochien last year, he has lot's of friends. Hiro, will make tons of friends as he gets a bit older! Not to worry! : )
There are many awesome other foreign wives out there, here in Japan, but not many live close by, huh? I hear ya! Ha ha ha! I understand that feeling too! Especially with me, moving out into the boonies/country side a few month's ago! Ha ha ha!
it wasn't the other mothers asking questions, it was the public health care type people. and i feel bad because i don't particularly want japanese friends. and that's what really makes me feel bad. like somehow i'm failing hiro by not having friends to socialize with.
