here is the batch i made yesterday. as you can see, the sugar and 'plums' have separated already. it was much prettier yesterday. actually, blue lotus wrote a
fabulous post last year if you're interested in making your own. it's quite easy, not too expensive and makes a delicious liqueur. it (ideally) takes a year to mature, though i think you can start drinking it in two or three months after it's made. the first time i made this, i got pregnant with hiro the following winter so i had to wait a long time to try my first batch! lol
here is a photo of last year's batch and this year's. ummmmm, umeshu!
and the little jar on its own (i have three jars of last year's brew. i needed the big jar to make this year's!)

Wow!
*heads off to Marunaka*
Oh yUm .. i can taste it now. I love to eat the plums at the bottom of the glass..
Wow indeed! I have never actually tried umeshu but I have heard it is lovely.
Will have to tag the recipe over at blue lotus for the future. Not like I will be drinking any time soon so a year to mature sounds just about right!
That looks yummy!!!
Although the making, trying, and ending up pregnant part scares me a little. :p
Yummy!! It looks delicious! I don't think I would ever attempt to make it myself, I would probably stuff it up somehow :P Although, I do like drinking it, especially when we go out for drinks!
lol! actually, i was pregnant when i first made it. hilarious! i assure you, umeshu is not a fertility drink!!
oh whoops! i need to rethink my previous comment....you know, i can't remember if i got pregnant before or after i made the umeshu! LOL either way, i was pregnant or nursing when it was ready to be drunk. *sigh* mommy brain to the extreme! but if it was after i made the umeshu, it was looooong after it was made and wasn't tasted yet!
Yumm, that looks delicious Illahee! : )
Mmmmmm, my favourite drink is ume-shu. Already got my jar ready and waiting for plums to ripen here...
And someone asked how long it lasts? I inherited all MIL's umeshu when she found out I liked it and the older it gets the more syruppy and liqueur like it gets. Yummmmmmm. And as for it's fertility effects? Ummm no comment....
mmmmmm looks good! especially now it is getting hotter/stickier, definately feels like umeshu weather!! enjoy your batch!
You've inspired me! I read Blue Lotus' post last year too, but messed around so long that I missed the ume. But after reading your post, I ran right out and bought all the supplies!
Yikes! The white alcohol my store had in the umeshu display was expensive! Do you know what kind of alcohol it is? I'm wondering if I can find some cheaper!
I *love* umeshu, I'm sure I won't be able to wait a whole year to drink it!
Aaah, umeshu!! I miss that! We got some homemade umeshu before from my inlaws and I thought they turned bad after 6 months in the storage room so I thew it all out! What a waste!!
my neighbor lady gave me ume and told me to make shu...but i decided to make jam instead... it turned out pretty sour...with lots of sugar, so i added strawberries and the ubiquitous BIWA..... pretty yummy stuff....
should make ume shu, i guess sometime....
I love umeshu and yours looks so damn good!My MIl makes it.But she isn't very clean concious so we get it with tiny black flies included.Ewwwww.
