isn't it cute? i couldn't find any elephant fabric that i liked (but, i didn't expect to) and first i got some super-cute stitch fabric (from disney's lilo & stitch) but after racing off to the restroom so hiro could use the toilet, i saw this (mushroom & ladybug) fabric in the discount bin. i thought i would use this first just in case.
it's a bit smaller than the sample, which surprised me a bit, but since hiro's bento is small it's fine. i can also put a spoon and fork set in, as well as the lunch mat (which is almost finished, i need to do a little whip stitching). i measured the finished product and it seemed like the sewing allowances were included in the pattern, but now i don't think so. but no worries, it still came out great, and cute, and wasn't that difficult to make.
and hiro's new bento:

I think you did a fantastic job!!! Well done!!! : )
That's so cute Illahee and even though it's not elephants I really think it matches. Something about the blueness? Spottiness? Lucky Hiro!
Wow!! I loveeee that print!! It is so cute - and great job!
I would totally buy something like that for myself (Or DH to his chagrin lol)
Hiro will be the envy of all.
Very cute. I didn't know he likes elephants. They are DD's favorite animal too.
If the sizes are a bit off I wouldn't worry about it. Our kindy gave everyone a whole handbook about the regulations for everything, including the specific sizes of all the bags and so on. No one has checked to make sure they are that size. In fact, I went back and remade a bag much bigger than they said. Not a peep from anyone.
I think they just get so specific about it because you know some anal Japanese mom is going to drive them crazy wanting to know every little detail since so many of the moms want to be told what to do instead of deciding for themselves, yk?
actually, the elephant is the mascot of the youchien.
i haven't received any info on bags and things, so we'll see what happens. a bag is part of the uniform, but i don't know if they actually use it for carrying things. lol
when the uniform comes in, maybe i'll get more info about what he'll need. or, i guess we'll learn trial by error after he starts school.
Oh it is so incredibly cute! I love it. I think the material matches really well also- It totally suits it.
Nice to hear that Hiro said he needed to go to toilet while you were shopping- and the bonus was that you found the material on the way back. Yay!
Wow, that looks fantastic!! I might have to ask you for some pointers when it's my turn (not for quite some time yet, though!)
Aw, the print is so cute. You really did a fab job. I'm impressed.
The print is adorable, the bag looks fabulous! And the bento box, now that is adorable!!!! You did do a fab job, it looks great- I think I'll be hiring out to have someone make mine... Does the bento box come with matching hashi? = )
Me again. :-)
Yes, we have a back pack that is part of the uniform. Her lunch, cup, toothbrush, calendar sticker book for attendance and so on go in it. But we still have to have all the other bags and homemade things:
bento bag
cup bag
lunch mat
big all purpose bag
p.e. clothing bag
extra clothing bag
inside shoe bag
outside shoe bag
smock
then later on I had to make a big potato bag for the field trip to dig sweet potato - used only once a year, but HAVE to have it
Those are all I can remember at the moment.
I think you have a bit more sewing ahead of you if yours is anything like mine. LOL! I like making the bags though.
oh my gosh that is soooo darned CUTE! Such a talented woman!
seriously that is soooo freakin cute!
